The Steward Debacle: Legal And Ethical Risks Of The New Breed Of Health Care For-Profits

September 5, 2025

By  Mary Beckman, Jill Horwitz

For-profit health care in America is not new. What is new is the involvement of investors loosely known as “private equity” investors. These firms, which increasingly own various types of institutional providers and professional practice groups, dominate health care markets in many areas across the country. Traditional health regulation has proved ineffective at managing the risks of this trend: consolidation of medical service markets, rising prices, and extraction of profits for the benefit of investors, resulting in insufficient reinvestment in operations, financial instability, and care shortages caused by abrupt closures. Existing regulatory structures meant to ensure that health care organizations prioritize patient safety and well-being have failed to ensure access to even the expected minimum quality of health care.
